This training course is designed to inform, guide and assist both managers and employees on the impacts of substance abuse, while at the same time creating awareness, which is the first step toward creating a positive behavior shift. The trainees taking this course will also take away vital information on developing, implementing and sustaining a highly effective drug abuse prevention policy and procedure system.

Workforce substance abuse is on the rise, driven by an increase an illicit drug and alcohol use and abuse, according to a Quest Diagnostics report. The report analyzed 10 million workforce urine test results. The company noted an increase across the board for cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines.

In the United States there are over 50 million binge drinkers, almost 17 million illegal drug users and more than 15 million people who abuse prescription drugs… and most of them have jobs. Substance abuse directly affects the user’s personality, health and ability to function safely in a workplace. It can also decrease productivity, create a hostile work environment and damage their company’s reputation.

It only takes 1 employee to come to work high, or drunk to injure or kill themselves or others.

In addition to the OSHA costly penalty amounts below, the cost to companies is tens of millions of dollars in lawsuit penalties for employees who are injured or killed by substance abusers in the workplace.

OSHA Penalties

Below are the maximum penalty amounts adjusted for inflation as of Jan. 23, 2019. (See OSHA Memo, Jan 23, 2019).
